I agree 100%. I like all your examples from the masters how there came to be there own.
Theory can seem confusing and stupid at first. Like you said you just keep adding to what you know.
Learn from people you love and ideas do come to you of ur own from help from your fav artist.
Great article.

Now instead of relying on chance to make something cool sounding (though chance never really goes away) I can think about exactly what to play in order to get the sound I'm looking for, or at least have a general idea.

My thoughts exactly. You can figure out a lot by trial and error, but why not take advantage of the trials and errors of generations of people before you?

Yea I agree with you. I've been playing guitar for a few years now (started in High School, now am in college). I learned a lot of basic techniques when I first started, but never really advanced much. In the past year I've been taking the time everyday to learn music theory and practice technique. Now instead of relying on chance to make something cool sounding (though chance never really goes away) I can think about exactly what to play in order to get the sound I'm looking for, or at least have a general idea. Thanks for writing these articles and lessons, they are very helpful.
